Lincoln Corner Kuala Lumpur Screens “The Great Fight For Disability Rights”

On September 10, 2015 Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer (ACAO) Michael Cavey introduced a special program at the Lincoln Corner in KL in honor of disabled persons in the U.S. and around the world.

Guests included about 50 disabled persons in Kuala Lumpur representing wheel chair users, the blind, the deaf, spinal injury persons, their care givers, and activists.

The audience watched a 30- minute documentary film, “The Great Fight for Disability Rights” about the disability rights movement in the United States which finally led to the adoption of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), 1990.

On behalf our organization, President, Secretary and Mr. Jeyaraj were participated.

We had an opportunity a discussion about the film and shared their individual experiences as disabled persons living primarily in Malaysia but also having lived a part of their lives in the U.S.

The entire audience applauded the documentary film. An activist emphasized that the film “should go viral” as it sent a very “powerful message” about treating the disabled as persons with “equal and inalienable rights as every other citizen.”

Another activist added, “the film has many examples we should incorporate here in our struggle for equal rights for the disabled.”

Sambutan Hari Wanita 2015 Peringkat Kebangsaan

Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat (KPWKM) melalui agensinya Jabatan Pembangunan Wanita (JPW) menganjurkan Sambutan Hari Wanita 2015 Peringkat Kebangsaan di Pusat Konvensyen Putrajaya (PICC) pada 24 Ogos 2015. Majlis dirasmikan oleh YAB Perdana Menteri Malaysia, Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul  Razak.

Tema sambutan Hari Wanita (Kebangsaan) 2015 kali ini adalah 'Raikan Kegemilangan' di mana setiap kejayaan dan pencapaian wanita di Malaysia terutamanya yang boleh dibanggakan harus diberi pengiktirafan yang sewajarnya agar wanita yang lain turut mengambil inisiatif dan juga berusaha dengan lebih kuat untuk terus maju. 

Goody bag kosong yg OKU terima semperna menyambut hari wanita kebangsaan 2015.

Golongan OKU sangat sedih atas layanan yg diberi oleh pihak penganjur. Semasa makan tengah hari tiada seorang pun sukarelawan menghidang dan melayan kami. Bila ditanya pelayan kami diberitahu makanan sudah habis.

Kami mengucapkan SYABAS atas jemputan serta layanan yg diberi kpd kami golongan.

We can’t cope with high costs, say couple

PETALING JAYA: “If a normal person has 10 problems, a disabled person has 100.”

This was the grouse made by couple V. Mageswaran and R. Jayaletchumy who are struggling to cope with the higher cost of living due to limited exemption for items under the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Magesvaran, 39, who is wheelchair bound, said the RM350 monthly disability allowance was not enough to cover their expenses.

“The Government only raised the allowance by RM50 and this is not enough to cover the increase in expenses due to the GST,” he said.

After becoming paralysed after a fall, Magesvaran was injured in an accident four years ago and required regular treatment for his open wounds.

“I need treatment at the hospital at least twice a week and travelling back and forth uses up quite a lot of my allowance,” he said.

To help make ends meet, Magesvaran said he worked a few days a month selling prayer items. He cannot remain in the same position for long periods.

“The pay is low and it does not really help in increasing our household income,” he said.

His wife Jayaletchumy, 39, who uses a walking aid due to a fractured spine from a fall a few years ago, said many items needed by the disabled were not GST-exempt.

She said items such as bandages, gauze, cotton and medicine used to treat Mages­varan’s open wounds did not fall under the exemptions.

The couple currently live in a rented home in Sentul which costs RM100 a month.

Wheelchair-bound Francis Siva, 57, said the monthly allowance of between RM200 and RM350 provided by the welfare department was not enough to cover a disabled person’s daily needs.

“It is not enough as I have to spend an extra RM200 each month to get the items I need,” he said.

Francis, who is also president of the non-profit organisation Independent Living & Training Centre, said most of his members required additional items and medicine which were not covered under the list of GST exemptions.

20 ILTC Malaysia members had opportunity to participated one of India famous Bollywood star Shankar Mahadevan performed at the Grand Ballroom Setia City Convention Centre (SCCC) in Shah Alam which was held on 1-5-2015 for the wedding and reception of the Dr. Arvind son of YBhg Tan Sri Dato' Hari Narayanan.

LOVE AND HOPE CHARITY DINNER 2015

Love and Hope Charity Dinner which was held on 14th March 2015 and organized by Pertubuhan Orang Cacat Cina Malaysia (POCCM) at Puchong, KL.

Love and Hope Charity Dinner was attended by more than 1000 sponsors, donors, receiver of wheelchairs and other well-wishers.

ILTC Malaysia extends our heartiest and sincere thanks and appreciation to Pertubuhan Orang Cacat Cina Malaysia for the kind contribution of 4 units of light weight fully detachable wheelchair (every wheelchair costs RM1500) for the ILTC Malaysia members with the vision to assist people with disabilities to lead independent lives without fear and comprehension as well as to integrate them into society and to be a part of a productive workforce of the nation towards this charity event.

This event was full of enthusiastic support from the community.
