PETALING JAYA: A disabled woman was blinded in her right eye and is in danger of losing sight in the left after a mentally-ill teenager tried to gouge them out with her hands.

The 19-year-old girl, described as “a very violent patient” escaped from her locked room in a welfare home in Kuala Kubu Baru and attacked the woman, who is also an inmate at the home, at about 6.30pm on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old woman from Seremban, who has a deformed leg and is unable to talk, had been staying at the home for the past 30 years.

It took five workers of the Taman Sinar Harapan home to pull the teenager away from the woman who was rushed to the Kuala Kubu Baru hospital for surgery.

Unfortunately, doctors were unable to save her right eye as it had almost been pulled out of the eye socket.

She has since been transferred to the Selayang Hospital for further treatment.

She was reported to be in stable condition and doctors were still assessing the extent of the damage on her left eye.

Hulu Selangor OCPD Supt Norel Azmi Yahya Afendy said one the woman’s siblings had lodged a police report.

“One of my officers visited the home but we did not arrest the teenager because we are considering her as a mental patient.

“We will wait for the doctor’s assessment on her mental state before completing investigations.“Ultimately, it will be up to the Deputy Public Prosecutor to decide whether to take further action on the matter,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code.

PAHANG TO INCREASE MONTHLY ALLOWANCE FOR OKUS

TEMERLOH, March 13 2012 (Bernama) -- The Pahang government has agreed to increase the monthly allowance RM70 per month given to 4,000 Persons With Disabilities (OKUs) to RM300.

Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said with the assistance could help them cope with the higher cost of living.

He told this to reporters after opening Pahang's OKU Day celebration, which was attended by more than 2,000 OKUs at Tun Abdul Razak Hall, here today.

Adnan said the new payment was expected to be made in April or May together with the arrears, which would be calculated from January.

He said, however, the payments would only be given to OKUd who were really not able to do any job.
