Govt bank trying to auction paralysed man’s house

Balan Perumal, who was paralysed in a workplace accident, claims his home is being sold under auction by Bank Simpanan Nasional without any notice.
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) has been urged to help a disabled home owner whose house is being auctioned off by Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN).
Seremban PSM Secretary Tinagaran Subramaniam said Balan Perumal’s troubles with the bank started in July last year.
Balan, who purchased a house in Taman Seremban Jaya last year, paid monthly instalments of RM700 a month to BSN.
However a workplace accident at a welding company in June 2015 left him paralysed from the waist down.
Speaking at a press conference outside Suhakam’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Balan said after the accident, he was instructed to rest and get treatment from Seremban Hospital.
“I informed BSN of my problem and they were aware that I am in the process of claiming my insurance. Why proceed with auctioning off my house?
“This is unfair to disabled people like me. They are auctioning off my house without any notice,” he said, adding that the payment of the instalments was only disrupted after his accident.
Balan’s sister, Devi Perumal, said she met an officer attached to BSN headquarters, who was also shocked to hear her explanation.
Tinagaran called on BSN to wait for Balan’s compensation claims from the Social Security Organisation (Socso) and insurance claims to be settled first.
“We appeal to BSN to try to understand Balan’s condition and not to think of profits alone.
“In this matter, I only want to ask BSN why Balan was not given the appropriate opportunity.”
Tinagaran also hoped there was no abuse of power and corruption in the bank, saying it was not possible for the bank to proceed with auctioning the house without first checking on what happened to Balan.
PSM also handed a memorandum to Suhakam Commissioner Francis Johen.
BSN could not be reached by FMT for a comment.
