Qualifying ceiling for disabled folk raised to RM1,200

KUALA LUMPUR: More disabled people will qualify for RM300 monthly allowance from the Government from this month with the qualifying ceiling raised to RM1,200.

Prior to this, only those earning RM750 a month and below were entitled to the allowance (elaun pekerja cacat or EPC).

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen said raising the ceiling would encourage employers to raise the salary for the disabled.

“The increase in the EPC will help the disabled to cope with the rising cost of living,” she added.

Effective this month too, she said, those under the poor household category would get RM700 a month as welfare aid from the Government, compared to RM400 before.

Dr Ng said major structural changes to the ceiling for eligibility has also resulted in another 177,000 households becoming eligible for the aid. Prior to this only 54,000 households were eligible.

The increase in the number of households and the amount in aid would cost the Government over a billion ringgit more, she said.

Dr Ng said the process for applying for the aid would also be reduced from three stages to one stage; meaning that only approval from the district level welfare office was needed.

“In the past, applicants had to go through three levels; district, state and federal level (ministry) before approval was granted,”

Dr Ng said the increase was timely in the wake of the rising cost of living.
She said households would get the payment by the 10th of every month from now onwards.

“Any delay will cause hardship as poor families need the money to buy food,” she said.
