Malaysia wins bid to host Paralympic assembly
By CELESTE FONG
BEIJING: Malaysia obtained eight votes against one to win the bid for hosting the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) world general assembly in Kuala Lumpur in November 2009.
Malaysian Paralympic Council president Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin said nine elected IPC governing board members took part in the voting by secret ballot.
“Out of total 13 elected members, 12 attended but two – Malaysia and Denmark – had to go out while the president (Sir Philip Craven) chaired the meeting and could not vote,” he said yesterday.
“We got eight votes against one,” said Zainal, adding that the results were overwhelming and showed the governing board members recognised Malaysia’s contribution and capability.
Five countries in all had bid to be hosts.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who arrived in Beijing for the Paralympic Games yesterday, described winning the bid as an honour.
Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, the wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, was expected to arrive in the Chinese capital today to attend the opening of the games at the National Stadium.
