THE disabled community at the Independent Living and Training Centre (ILTC) Malaysia have to wade through 0.3m waters to enter the premises when there is a downpour.
Poor drainage is the reason for the flooding.
More than a dozen disabled residents live at the bungalow unit located at the end of Kampung Sungai Dua Tambahan, off Jalan Batu Arang, Rawang.
ILTC Malaysia president Francis Siva said he raised the matter with Rawang assemblyman Gan Pei Nei, Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) president Suliman Abd Rahman and MPS councillor Letchimanan Thatharan several months ago, but no action had been taken to resolve the issue.
“MPS had sent their engineers here on Feb 17 to assess the situation, but nothing has been done so far.
“Water from the Kampung Sungai Dua Tambahan village goes down the hill through our drain and into the vegetable garden beside our home.
“During a downpour, the backflow of water ends up on the road and the water level can be as high as 0.3m.
“My worry is if there is a major flood and an emergency, residents here would be unable to get out of the area in time.
“I hope something will be done to help us as there are many disabled people living here,’’ he said.
ILTC Malaysia secretary Gurdip Kaur, 55, who is also a former MPS councillor said the council should build a new drainage in the area as the flooding would get worse during the monsoon season.
“Our staff have to clean up the mud and rubbish from the drains after the water subsides.
“We hope the authorities will look into this matter and help ease our burden,’’ said Gurdip.
Meanwhile, Raja Manickam, 33, who manages the one hectare plot of land next to ILTC Malaysia, said the area was flooded whenever it rained.
“Although there is about 100m between ILTC Malaysia’s bungalow and the monsoon drain, the area gets flooded as there is no proper drainage.
“I hope the authorities will build a drain that leads into the monsoon drain so that the area will not become flooded,’’ he said.
When contacted, MPS Public Relations officer Ahmad Fauzi Ishak said the council was looking into the matter.
