KUALA LUMPUR: A group of disabled people today organised a protest against the lack of functional toilets for the disabled at Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) stations.
Citing the Rawang station as an example, Independent Living and Training Centre Malaysia (ILTC Malaysia) president G. Francis Siva said although such facilities exists, the facilities for the disabled in a number of KTMB stations are non-functional.
“The facilities provided by KTMB at its train stations simply cannot be used. “
At the Rawang station, for example, the only disabled-friendly toilet available here has been locked up and turned into a storeroom instead.
"This cannot be tolerated any longer. People must understand and be made aware that the disabled community too, has basic necessities much like any other human beings. “
We express our utmost disappointment towards KTMB. They have not been doing a proper job as a responsible provider," he told reporters during the protest.
Siva said that on Sunday, ILTC member Murugan Mariappan who commutes via train daily, claimed he was treated badly by the janitor when he asked for the key to the toilet.
"To my knowledge, the condition of the toilet had been like that since February and every single time that I asked for the key, they always say that the toilet has no water supply or electricity.”
“Yesterday (Monday), when I asked for the key from the janitor, she responded rudely responded and showed her backside towards me, which is preposterous," said Murugan.
He said that both him and ILTC secretary Gurdip Kaur took matters into their own hands and decided to clean the toilet themselves.
