Selangor Government backtracks on appointment of independent councillors

PETALING JAYA: The Selangor Government boasts that 71 of the municipal councillors in the state are independent and represent NGOs but the actual figure is only 10.According to the Coalition of Non-Governmental Organisations and Professional Appointed Councillors (Conpac), the other so-called independents are actually members of political parties that form the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat government.
This is the third time Pakatan had gone back on its election manifesto promise to allocate 30% of councillor positions to independent people.
State executive councillor in charge of local government Ronnie Liu dismissed the Conpac claim. But he admitted that 61 of them were members of political parties which make up the Pakatan government
